September 20, 2019 is the next 3rd Friday in Downtown Salisbury. 3rd Friday will be held outdoors, with artists, crafters and live music on the Plaza. This month, the theme is Chalk It Up, and it’s all about bringing color and vibrancy to downtown. From chalk art, chalk paint, and colorful initiatives – this 3rd Friday is sure to be lively!
3rd Friday will continue to use a different format, as construction progresses into the intersection of Main Street and Division Street this month. Artists and crafters will still gather on the Plaza – but the rest of the fun is moving down to Lot 15 and W. Market Street, in front of The Acorn Market. There you will find special activities like the Bookmobile, bounce houses hosted by Son Rise Church, and a Chalk-Art area!
On the main stage, there will be live music by Christine Havrilla and the Gyspy Fuzz, with her self-described “Neofunkadelicfolktwangrock” style. At 5:30 p.m., Wicomico Goes Purple will take the stage to announce the winners of the Downtown Salisbury Wicomico Goes Purple Window Decorating Contest, with special remarks by Mayor Jake Day and WGP organizer Stephanie Willey and a moment of silence with Clarion Call. The Plaza will be decked out in purple, and attendees in support of the initiative are encouraged to also wear purple to bring awareness to the opioid epidemic.
On the Plaza, check out Kuhn’s Jewelers for a special Meet-the-Artist Trunk Show from noon to 6 p.m. featuring local artist Abbi Custis and her art which inspired her designs for Evocateur, now exclusively at Kuhns. The Salisbury Jaycees will be pouring beer and wine and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will have family-friendly prices on burgers and dogs fresh off the grill in the Courtyard, complete with plenty of chalk for the kids!
Salisbury Art Space will present the 2019 Showcase of Eastern Shore Artists, featuring 34 artworks ranging from folk to fine art, created by artists from around the region. The Robinson Gallery will feature an exquisite solo exhibition by Jinni Kim (Jinsoon Oh), inspired by her experience with and understanding of nature. In the gift shop, check out the monthly highlighted ceramic artist with the Clay Guild of Delmarva.
Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campuswill host the opening reception for two brand new exhibitions - On Water and Close Waters. On Waterbrings together photographic explorations of water and its role in our perception of and interactions with the world. Close Waters includes artwork from 12 regional and local emerging artists that is connected to this fundamental substance.
Be sure to also check out - “What if you Fly” – Salisbury University’s brand mural – #SalisburyWings by local artist Sarah Perdue. The project was inspired by poet, Erin Hanson, and street artist, Kelsey Montague and was funded by Salisbury University Art Galleries. Also in that building - check out the Salisbury University Entrepreneurship Center - which will be open, giving tours, updates on design plans, and hosting student entrepreneur tables.
The downtown bars and restaurants are ready with live music for 3rd Friday. Brew River is hosting a Captain’s Party with the Chesapeake Cowboys, ahead of the Boat Docking competition Saturday. Complete with live boat docking practice runs, the event is all -ages until 10 p.m., free admission and includes live band Kaotic from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Roadie Joe’s Bar and Grill will have live music on the patio with The Gifted from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Market Street Inn will have late night jams with Nick at Nite and Mojo’s will have a black light party late night with DJ E-State. The Downtown Trolley will begin its free service at 5:45 at SU Academic Commons to bring students to Downtown Salisbury for 3rd Friday.
In the event of rain - all indoor activities will go on as planned. The outdoor activities, including art and craft vendors, may be canceled due to inclement weather - an announcement will be made no later than noon on 3rd Friday.
3rd Friday is a downtown economic development initiative and a project of the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District in partnership with The City of Salisbury.
